SurePrep is a U.S. tax productivity company that processes high volumes of taxpayer source documents for top accounting firms. Faced with a compressed filing season (mid-February to April 15) and hundreds of highly variable form types (W‑2s, 1099s, K‑1s, brokerage statements, etc.), SurePrep needed to dramatically increase throughput, accuracy and consistency across its BPO operations while reducing costly manual data entry.

SurePrep implemented ABBYY technologies—initially FormReader and FlexiCapture, then the FineReader Engine SDK integrated into its 1040Scan workflow—to classify pages, perform OCR/ICR, capture data via hundreds of Flexi templates and route questionable fields to a proprietary verification app. The system paid for itself in two years, reads data from over 900 document variations, eliminated more than 50% of manual entry, improved reliability and throughput, and enabled a new service model that let client firms reduce outsourcing while expanding SurePrep’s market reach.
