A ABBYY Case Study
Shanghai International Studies University (SISU), a leading foreign-language research and teaching institution with millions of volumes and thousands of periodicals, needed to digitize its multilingual collections to improve access for scholars. Initial outsourcing to a BPO proved too costly, slow and unable to deliver reliable OCR across the university’s many languages, so SISU partnered with Digital Information Technology (DIT) to bring digitization in-house.
DIT integrated ABBYY Recognition Server 3.0 into SISU’s workflow, providing centralized, scalable OCR with ADRT layout retention and support for 198 languages, enabling accurate conversion of books, journals and newspapers into full-text searchable digital files. The result was lower costs, high-volume processing, improved recognition quality and discoverability, and an ongoing expansion of digitization across the university and its research institutes.
