Robust OCR service raises productivity for leading provider of construction data

Construction Management Data (CMD) is a leading North American provider of construction project intelligence that collects and converts paper and digital plans into searchable documents for contractors and suppliers. Facing roughly 35 million pages a year—including oversized plans up to 44" x 36"—their legacy OCR required extensive manual preparation, lacked accuracy on complex drawings and couldn’t scale to archive years of historical data or meet growing seasonal demand.

CMD implemented ABBYY Recognition Server after side-by-side testing, deploying the solution across 11 servers and scaling from a 72‑core to a combined 156‑core configuration to handle production and a large archival project. The conversion of historic data finished in seven months, throughput and search accuracy improved significantly, human intervention was minimized through automation, and users now benefit from precise searchable PDFs with word-level highlighting.
