Nationwide Assessment of Rationale and Safe Use of Injections Made Possible With ABBYY’s Form Processing Software

All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) led a nationwide "Assessment of Injection Practices in India" after WHO data showed widespread unsafe injections. The multi‑level household and facility survey required processing an estimated 57,600 hand‑filled questionnaires — a workload projected to take six months and substantial manpower if done manually.

NETSPIDER India deployed ABBYY FormReader to capture barcoded ICR forms and export data for analysis; using Canon scanners at 300 dpi, two research assistants processed all 57,600 forms in three months, saving roughly 48,288 man‑hours and delivering high extraction accuracy. The study found 63% of injections were unsafe, spurring government action (introduction of auto‑disabled syringes in the Universal Immunization Program and establishment of Model Injection Centres), and ABBYY continues to support ongoing data collection and training.
