Aviasales (branded JetRadar internationally) is one of the world’s largest flight search engines, serving about 5 million users per month and ranking in the top 10 app store travel apps. Their challenge was to remove the friction of manual entry when booking tickets on mobile — users had to type passport details, slowing and complicating purchases.

Aviasales integrated ABBYY Cloud OCR SDK so users can photograph the passport MRZ and have passenger fields auto-filled; a small custom script maps MRZ encodings (e.g., S4EV3UK → SHEVCHUK) for new Russian passports. The feature was implemented in two weeks, delivered a user-friendly one-click flow, and processed over 10,000 passports in the first four months, significantly speeding up mobile bookings.
