Germany’s Largest Public Health Insurer Uses ABBYY Recognition Server to Digitise Its Legal Department’s Documents

The AOK Association’s Department for Legal and Complaint Related Issues, part of Germany’s largest public health insurer, needed a way to make its extensive legal archives and court judgments searchable. Their existing legal management system, AOK Lecare, stored many scanned documents that could only be searched manually, creating inefficiency and slowing legal work across locations.

AOK integrated ABBYY Recognition Server with Lecare to perform OCR, convert image PDFs into searchable PDFs, attach detailed metadata, and send records into their archive. The solution—deployed quickly and with high recognition accuracy—enabled full‑text search across large documents, automated intake of most incoming mail, reduced workload for ~800 staff, and sped document retrieval, with potential to extend the approach to other business areas.
