DL Consulting Is Cutting the Cost on Digitizing the News with ABBYY

DL Consulting, the team behind the Veridian collection management software and the Elephind historical newspapers portal, helps libraries and cultural institutions digitize large microfilm newspaper collections. Their challenge was the scale and cost of converting hundreds of millions of aging newspaper pages into web-ready, standards-compliant digital objects (METS/ALTO), with traditional workflows costing upwards of $1 per page and limited automation for large projects.

DL Consulting built an automated pipeline around ABBYY Recognition Server (with ALTO support) to generate METS/ALTO XML and standardized images, hosting the solution in the Amazon cloud. The new process removes most manual operators, scales to large projects, and cut the cost-per-page dramatically—from about $1 to just a few cents—while enabling compliant, searchable online access to vast newspaper archives.
