The Australian Taxation Office (ATO), which collects the majority of Australia’s government revenue and handles millions of taxpayer documents each year, faced a growing backlog of non‑structured correspondence (“white mail”) — letters, faxes and other paper items not suited to existing form-based OCR/ICR workflows. Manual scanning and indexing became unsustainable as volumes climbed (reaching roughly 500,000 items), so the ATO sought an automated solution capable of handling millions of pages annually.
ATO selected TopSoft’s SmartCapture 7.0 Corporate Edition, powered by the ABBYY FineReader Engine, to automate scanning, OCR, data extraction, verification and error correction. The deployment enabled high-throughput processing (up to 30,000 items per day in peak season) and supports the ATO’s goal of processing some 3.5 million pages of unstructured documents per year, dramatically reducing manual effort and improving throughput.
