AthletiCo’s Paper-Heavy Billing Department Gets into Shape

AthletiCo, a Chicago-area outpatient orthopedic rehabilitation provider with 32 offices, faced a paper-heavy billing process that relied on manually handling large explanation-of-benefit (EOB) packets and checks. EOBs could reach 1,500 pages, check information was handwritten on forms, and document retrieval often took hours or even weeks, creating delays, lost productivity, and billing risk.

DocWorks implemented an in-house solution using ABBYY FlexiCapture Studio and FineReader Engine with Kodak scanning and an Oracle-based workflow to automatically capture, match payments, and generate deposit slips. The system made records searchable in seconds, eliminated the need to hire an additional staffer (saving at least $25,000 annually), reassigned clerical resources to higher-value tasks, and streamlined e-form distribution—significantly improving efficiency and cash collection.
