Xerox was commissioned to digitize a large federal paper archive that contained over 3,800 cases (more than 570,000 pages). Previously officials had to wait one to two days for archivists to locate and copy documents; the project required consistent annotations and full-text searchability to make the archive quickly accessible and usable for decision-making.
Xerox used its scanning infrastructure together with ABBYY Recognition Server to perform unattended, 24/7 OCR and produce searchable PDFs and standardized annotations (each page processed in about 15 seconds). The automation sped the conversion project by 25%, reduced costs by 7.5%, digitized the entire archive, and cut document retrieval time from days to minutes.
