A ABBYY Case Study
The Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) handles growing numbers of patent applications submitted as specifications and drawings in mixed formats (PDF, XML, TIFF, JPEG). Manual processing and ordinary OCR were slow and error-prone—figure numbers in drawings were often treated as images (only 10–30% extracted), making cross-referencing between specifications and drawings time-consuming and complex for both examiners and applicants.
KIPO’s partner ReTIA implemented ABBYY FlexiCapture with FlexiLayout to automatically classify documents, extract texts, figures and tables, verify data and export structured XML. Deployed on a distributed architecture with two quad-core processing stations, the solution processes 42,000 pages per day, significantly reducing examination time, improving customer service and streamlining the patenting process for Korean inventors.
