ABBYY FlexiCapture Checks Proficiency Level in School Subjects of Brazilian Students

The Fundação Instituto de Pesquisas Econômicas (FIPE), founded on the basis of the Faculty of Economics and Business, University of São Paulo (FEA-USP), launched a first‑of‑its‑kind program to measure elementary and middle‑school students’ proficiency in mathematics and language and to relate results to socio‑economic and personality factors. Running tests twice per academic year across Brazil, FIPE faced a major data‑capture challenge: automate scanning, recognition and processing of handwritten answer sheets and parent questionnaires at scale while minimizing time and personnel.

FIPE partnered with Macrosolution, which implemented ABBYY FlexiCapture as the core data‑capture engine; scanned forms were automatically classified and converted into business‑ready data, routed to two verification workstations and processed by a seven‑person team. Results were published on a website for teachers, submitted to the Municipal Secretary of Education to inform policy, and the solution delivered the high speed and quality performance highlighted by Mr. Marcos Lucania.
