A ABBYY Case Study
Resources for the Blind (RBI) is a Philippine non-profit (est. 1988) that produces and distributes Braille textbooks and services for blind students nationwide. With about 2,000 blind students served, roughly 5,000 textbook volumes and up to 500,000 pages are processed annually; RBI’s staff of 50 found manual retyping to be the most time-consuming, error-prone bottleneck in producing accessible Braille and audio materials.
ABBYY donated FineReader Corporate Edition for four workstations to automate text conversion: scanned pages are converted by OCR into editable electronic files that can be prepared for Braille or audio output. The solution eliminated much manual data entry, increased accuracy and productivity, and significantly reduced staff time and effort in producing accessible textbooks.
