ABBYY FineReader Engine Helps Blind Readers

HonestVision, a Seoul-based company developing assistive technology for people with visual impairments, launched SoriAn to let blind and low-vision users scan printed materials and have them read aloud. The primary challenge was to deliver a fast, easy-to-use personal device that produced high-quality speech and reliable OCR across Hangul, Hanja and English for books, mail, invoices and medical documents.

Working with partner ReTIA, HonestVision combined Canon scanners, VoiceWare TTS and ABBYY FineReader Engine for accurate multi-language OCR and rapid document processing. The SoriAn product enables independent reading of literature and everyday documents, has secured government welfare subsidies for users, and is used by hospitals to provide on-the-spot access to prescriptions and diagnoses—measurably improving accessibility and quality of life for visually impaired people.
