A hard nut cracked: the scanning and recognition of medical prescriptions in pharmacies

ASYS, a pharmacy-owned IT company founded in 1982, faced a growing challenge: healthcare reforms required prescription data in electronic form but linking GP and pharmacy systems wasn’t feasible, leaving pharmacies to re-enter prescription and patient data manually. Processing handwritten or paper prescriptions quickly and without errors is critical because the data are sensitive and affect patient safety and regulatory compliance.

ASYS solved this by building SMARTscan on ABBYY FormReader, which scans prescription images, automatically identifies completed fields, recognises and verifies the content, allows manual correction, and exports data into the pharmacy system. The solution sped up processing, improved accuracy and regulatory adherence (e.g., Aut-idem substitution, validity checks, recalls), simplified inventory and reporting, and proved easy to integrate and reliable in day-to-day use.
