3M 360 Encompass System for healthcare now with text recognition from ABBYY

3M has partnered with ABBYY to address a common healthcare challenge: many hospitals still rely on paper-based and scanned documents (doctors’ letters, discharge reports, archived records) that electronic coding systems cannot analyse. To extend data-based coding in its 3M 360 Encompass Health Information System, 3M needed a way to reliably convert analogue clinical documents into structured text for accurate coding and billing.

The solution embeds ABBYY’s high-accuracy OCR into the 3M 360 Encompass coding module so printed and scanned clinical documents are transformed into structured text, mapped to codes using 3M’s medical terminology and knowledge base, and exported into the HIS. This streamlines coding workflows, improves recognition accuracy, opens access to paper archives, and is entering a pilot phase in German-speaking countries ahead of a pan‑European rollout.
