Scaling Web Application Delivery for Education

University of the Arts London, Europe’s largest university for art, design and the performing arts, runs more than 25 interactive websites and bandwidth‑heavy visual applications from two data centers (Apache on VMware with MySQL/Oracle backends). Its existing Radware load balancers were maxed out during a new web service project, so the university needed a redesigned hardware/software platform that could route traffic across sites, terminate SSL, handle TCP/UDP traffic, provide persistence, perform detailed health checks, and support graceful maintenance and slow‑start behaviors.

The university deployed four A10 Networks Application Delivery Controllers to replace the aging devices, gaining built‑in global server load balancing, URL switching and customizable health checks across both data centers with an all‑inclusive licensing model. The new ADCs delivered scalable performance and added functionality at lower initial cost, enabling fast, reliable delivery of rich visual content, easier content tailoring for diverse student audiences, and removal of future license‑upgrade funding concerns.
