Accelerating the User Experience for China’s Largest Online Retail Site

Taobao, China’s largest online retail site with nearly 100 million registered users and more than 1.5 million sellers, faced growing traffic and performance demands across its data centers and CDN nodes. Its aging load‑balancing systems could not deliver the required Layer 7 performance, stability or scalability to ensure fast, reliable e‑commerce during traffic surges.

Taobao deployed 30+ A10 ADCs and additional mid‑range units, using Flexible Traffic ASICs to accelerate Layer 4 load balancing, HA and DDoS protection in data centers and Layer 7 load balancing, connection reuse and URL‑hashing in CDN sites. The result was higher throughput and stability, a 2:1 consolidation of appliances, faster user experience, lower cost per transaction and reduced power/space usage.
