Rhätische Bahn (RhB), a Swiss railway company, faced the challenge of modernizing its logistics to offer new services like real-time cargo tracking for its 500 freight wagons. They needed a high-performance IoT solution to monitor wagon position, movement, and condition, and required the implementation to be GDPR-compliant and secure. They partnered with vendor A1 Digital to implement their Rail Insight solution.

A1 Digital equipped all wagons with energy-self-sufficient SmartCargo telematics devices and used their IoT platform for data processing. The solution provides real-time information, allows for the setting of monitoring limits, and includes an SMS fallback for areas with no network coverage. This has increased operational efficiency in planning freight transport and offers the potential to reduce maintenance costs with reliable data.
