EWI Tackling the Skilled Labor Shortage With Smart Manufacturing

EWI, a manufacturing research and engineering firm, developed a tele‑welding solution to address a growing shortage of skilled welders and the need to keep workers safe and productive offsite. The challenge was to combine robotics with live human oversight, requiring high‑quality, low‑latency audio/video streaming and real‑time interactivity so experienced welders could monitor and control welds from anywhere.

EWI partnered with Wowza, using Wowza Streaming Engine and Professional Services to build a WebRTC end‑to‑end streaming architecture. The result was a prototype tele‑welding system with smooth audio/video and under 500 ms latency, enabling remote welders to work across long distances, improve safety, extend career longevity, and help manufacturers retain skilled labor.
