Caltrans District Decreases Water Use by 33% and Recoups $1.4 Million During Historic Drought

California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) District 12 manages more than 2,800 acres of irrigated landscape across Orange County, with about 75% of its water devoted to highway irrigation. During a historic drought and under strict state water restrictions, Caltrans needed a better way to conserve water while maintaining safe, healthy landscaping. HydroPoint Data Systems helped address this challenge with its WeatherTRAK smart irrigation controllers.

HydroPoint Data Systems, working through WeatherTRAK and Hydro-Scape Irrigation and Landscape Supplies, replaced 342 outdated timer-based controllers with a smart irrigation system. The result was a 33% reduction in water use, 295 million gallons saved annually, and more than $1.4 million recovered in first-year costs. Caltrans also improved operational efficiency and worker safety with mobile control, alerts, and faster field response, with payback achieved in under two years.
