Edgecombe County Public Schools pilots 95 Percent Group with 93% minority enrollment and year-one literacy gains

Edgecombe County Public Schools, a district serving approximately 5,500 students in rural North Carolina, faced a challenge with its foundational literacy instruction. The elementary and preschool director, Dr. Lutashia Dove, determined their previous curriculum was not strong enough and was failing to produce adequate student growth. Seeking a solution aligned with the science of reading, the district turned to 95 Percent Group and its One95 Literacy Ecosystem.

The solution involved implementing 95 Percent Group's 95 Phonics Core Program for Tier 1 instruction, followed by Tier 2 intervention resources including the 95 Phonics Level Library and 95 Phonics Chip Kits. Nearly a year after beginning the implementation, district leadership reported being highly pleased with the results. The program provided a common instructional language and led to all students growing toward grade-level reading.
