Crowley Logistics Uses 3Gtms to Manage the Largest Defense Department Contract For Surface Transportation

Crowley Logistics won the bid for the U.S. Department of Defense’s largest surface transportation contract but faced unprecedented scale and complexity — new LTL and freight-optimization requirements, stricter communications and tendering rules, and the need to stand up a new department. To succeed they needed a fundamentally different TMS that could adapt to many “firsts” and manage evolving DoD requirements.

Crowley partnered with 3Gtms, a Tier 1 TMS, to configure a flexible, secure system tailored to more than 200 pages of DoD requirements (validated across eight workshops) and to train teams on new processes. The solution added two‑factor authentication, a carrier portal, enhanced AR/AP logic and a Transportation Control Tower for real‑time visibility and automation. Crowley now processes 70,000 transactions per day, met every milestone and on‑time target, cut shipment-status errors from 25% to about 1–2%, and gained centralized data-driven workflows that supported contract compliance and future growth.
