With the Help of Geomagic Wrap, There Is New Hope for Burn Survivors

3D Systems, in partnership with CimMed, tackled the challenge of painful, time-consuming facial impression techniques for burn survivors by using Geomagic Wrap and 3D scanning. Traditional compression-mask fitting required anesthetizing patients and about 10 hours of operating-room and technician time, risking further trauma and infection during a critical stage of treatment.

CimMed trains nursing staff to use a handheld scanner to capture a patient’s face noninvasively, then uses Geomagic Wrap to produce a precise dataset for machining molds. The resulting biocompatible compression masks fit closely, retain medication and moisture, reduce scar tissue formation, lower infection risk, and shorten recovery time—streamlining care and improving outcomes for burn patients.
