A 3D Systems Case Study
Uniloy Milacron, which manufactures precision molds for brand-defining plastic containers, needed a faster, more accurate way to duplicate complex free‑form parts (like a two‑liter milk bottle) than traditional CAD or touch‑probe digitizing allowed. Working with GKS Inspection Services (Laser Design), they faced long capture times, limited point density and the problem of tying up CNC machines for digitizing.
GKS used a Laser Design DS 3040 non‑contact scanner on a rotary platform to capture about two million points in roughly one hour, then processed the data in Geomagic Wrap to produce clean polygon and NURBS CAD models. The result: ±0.0001" accuracy, dramatically reduced development time (from ~24 hours to ~1 hour for capture), more accurate molds, and freed CNC capacity—improving workflow and speeding new container production.
