The Outside Speeds Product Design with High Quality 3D Models

The Outside, a product design studio serving clients such as Mattel, Rubbermaid, Kodak, Fisher‑Price and Marvel, needed a faster way to add realistic texture and fine detail to CAD models used for rapid prototyping, focus groups, functional testing and catalog photography. Founder Kyle Houchens found traditional NURBS workflows slow and cumbersome for finishing surfaces and transitions, which lengthened development cycles and added cost.

Kyle adopted Geomagic Sculpt and built a hybrid Sculpt+Rhino workflow to rough out forms in Rhino and finish textures, fillets and transitions in Sculpt. The change cut modelling time dramatically (typical jobs dropped to about 15–20 hours), produced fully textured STL parts ready for SLA printing, sanding and painting, delivered faster client feedback, and paid for the software with a single job—boosting quality, speed and the studio’s bottom line.
