A 3D Systems Case Study
3D Systems provided the 3D scanning hardware and software that enabled researchers at Stephen F. Austin State University’s Center for Regional Heritage Research to tackle a longstanding challenge: studying the shape, decoration and use of Caddo ceramic vessels (A.D. 800–1700) when traditional 2D measurements and limited access to intact artifacts made comparative, replicable analysis difficult. The team needed a non‑invasive, portable method to capture detailed geometry and color across collections scattered over a four‑state region.
Using Geomagic Design X and Geomagic Control together with portable scanners (ZScanner 700CX and a Creaform Go!SCAN 3D with up to 0.1 mm accuracy), the researchers scanned vessels, generated reference geometry and exported precise point data for geometric morphometrics. The workflow produced high‑resolution, full‑color digital archives that broaden access, enable reproducible measurements and statistical comparisons, and have already revealed significant variation in Caddo ceramic form—opening new lines of inquiry into production, use and cultural change.
