Standard Metal Products - Customer Case Study

Standard Metal Products (SMP) is a San Francisco machine shop founded by artist-turned-machinist Kevin Binkert that specializes in prototypes and short-run production. Faced with complex assemblies (like multi-part Gorter valves), challenging threading operations, and customer demands for faster turnarounds—including time-sensitive TV builds—manual programming and disparate workflows were slowing jobs and limiting capacity.

Binkert adopted GibbsCAM Lathe and Mill modules alongside an Omax waterjet and SolidWorks modeling, using GibbsCAM’s thread-milling, graphical editing, integrated cut-part rendering, and multi-format CAD support. The result was significantly faster, more reliable programming and machining, reduced lead times, and boosted credibility—enabling SMP to complete complex projects (including a traffic-busting truck in three weeks), win TV work, expand capacity, and grow its business.
