Revealing an Ancient Tomb’s Secrets with Geomagic Control X

3D Systems partnered with the Gaya National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage (GNRICH) to digitize an ancient tomb discovered in Changnyeong, South Korea. The challenge was to capture the entire tomb and four human skeletons in high-detail 3D, consolidate a massive 3.7 GB of scan data into a single master file, and prepare the data for analysis and physical reproduction without risking damage to the remains.

Using long-range and close-range scanners together with Geomagic Control X (and Geomagic Design X for production), the team aligned, merged, and reduced large datasets on existing hardware to create a precise common 3D model. The processed scans supported measurements and forensic analyses (volume, length, anatomical features), informed age/height/weight/ancestry estimates and mtDNA studies, and produced resin-printable bone models to support ongoing research into causes of death and other physical attributes.
