Restoring the Beauty to a Vintage Porsche with Geomagic and 3D Systems’ Quickparts on Demand Manufacturing

Emory Motorsports, led by Rod Emory and rooted in a family tradition of custom Porsche restyling, was asked to update the windshield frame of an early Porsche Roadster to a lower, leaner profile while preserving the car’s original aesthetics. The challenge: no CAD data existed for these vintage components, and Emory needed a precise way to design and verify a new A‑pillar shape before committing to production.

Emory scanned the existing parts with a Faro Arm and used Geomagic Design X to create feature-based, editable solid models, then ordered an SLA prototype from 3D Systems’ Quickparts in an ABS-like material. The five-day turnaround produced a high-fidelity test piece that they fit on the car for immediate customer feedback; the prototype validated the design, minimized waste, reduced production risk and cost, and has become a regular part of Emory’s prototyping workflow.
