A 3D Systems Case Study
Next Intent, a precision shop in San Luis Obispo, partnered with JPL to machine dozens of critical Mars Rover components—wheels, titanium hubs, camera mounts and intricate suspension arms. The work demanded extreme thin-wall machining, tight GD&T from limited-dimension drawings, match-fitting for electron-beam welding, and preservation of structural integrity for space use, creating high risk for tooling, tolerance and communication errors.
Next Intent solved this by using native SolidWorks-to-GibbsCAM interoperability and GibbsCAM’s Cut Part Rendering, plus reseller support and documented screen captures reviewed with setup operators. The workflow let programmers simulate and visualize cuts, catch tooling constraints early, prompt design tweaks, and produce error-free NC data—saving hours or days, reducing scrap and enabling successful manufacture of the rover parts used in the Mars mission.
