A 3D Systems Case Study
SoulCake, a California creative agency, was commissioned to design the Geekie Awards trophy — a life-size cyan ray gun — but faced a tight two-month timeline, limited budget, and no in-house production capabilities. The challenge was to produce a high-quality, low-volume award that matched their interactive, iconic design (including a magnetic base) and would be ready for the show.
They partnered with 3D Systems’ Quickparts on-demand printing service, which produced a 3D-printed master, created an RTV silicone mold, and cast the awards in a high-strength, ABS-like urethane with bright cyan coloring and gloss finish. Quickparts delivered on time and on budget; SoulCake and recipients (including NASA’s Curiosity team and Stan Lee) praised the finish and craftsmanship, and the awards performed as intended at the ceremony.
