Patient-Specific, 3D-Printed Orthopedic Models Game Changer in Procedure Planning and Patient Understanding

3D Systems worked with Dr. Vidal Barchilon at Meir Medical Center to address a common orthopedic challenge: translating 2D CT scans into something tangible that both surgeons and patients can easily understand. Dr. Barchilon needed a simple, clinician-friendly way to generate patient-specific, life-size 3D models from DICOM imaging without specialized technical expertise so he could better assess fracture anatomy and communicate treatment options.

The team implemented 3D Systems’ D2P (DICOM to PRINT) software to produce accurate, patient-specific 3D-printed bone models. These models improved pre-operative planning—allowing verification of plate and screw fit and shortening procedure time—and significantly enhanced patient comprehension of their injuries and treatment plans. The technology has led to better surgical preparedness and stronger patient engagement, with potential future gains from adding elastic soft-tissue simulation.
