Partial Hand Prosthetics Company Scales Manufacturing with Help from 3D Systems

Point Designs, a partial‑hand prosthetics company spun out of the University of Colorado, designs the Point Digit solution but saw demand quickly outstrip its in‑house manufacturing capacity. The company needed a production partner that could deliver repeatable, high‑quality parts while preserving tight tolerances and clinical performance, and chose 3D Systems to scale production and enable a material upgrade.

Working with 3D Systems’ Application Innovation Group, Point Designs optimized designs for additive manufacturing (including printed live hinges and reduced assembly), reoriented parts to double build throughput, and transitioned from steel to titanium using DMP and LaserForm TiGr23 in just six months. The result: a 30% weight reduction, higher yield and repeatability, no more backorders, faster time‑to‑market, and strengthened DfAM expertise for future product launches.
