Otterbox Achieves Better, Faster, More Trifecta with Geomagic Software

OtterBox, a maker of rugged protective cases, needed to accelerate product development and expand capacity without sacrificing the precise fit and quality customers expect. Facing short product lifecycles (10–12 months), a flood of new devices, and delays and surface-quality problems from outsourced reverse engineering, the company required a faster, more reliable way to turn device scans into production-ready CAD models.

OtterBox brought 3D reverse engineering in-house using 3D Systems’ Geomagic Design X paired with Creaform and Laser Design scanners, enabling clean, design-intent surfaces and better designer collaboration. The change cut scanning and processing time roughly in half (from ~7–10 days outsourced to ~3–5 days in-house), reduced rework and security risks, and helped compress overall development time—supporting roughly 10–12 product releases per month and more than 100 products a year.
