Ormco Uses Reverse Engineering to Deliver Efficient Orthodontic Treatments

Ormco, based in Glendora, CA, set out to shorten and improve orthodontic treatment with its Insignia line of custom-designed appliances. The company faced the industry problem that traditional braces are made for an “average” mouth and rely on manual bracket placement, producing long, unpredictable treatments—especially for complex cases—and prior CAD attempts proved impractical until recent advances in software and computing power.

Ormco partnered with Geomagic and Geometric Software Solutions to implement 3D reverse engineering: impressions are scanned into dense point clouds, Geomagic Anatomy isolates teeth, adds roots and creates watertight 3D models, and Design software generates patient-specific jigs, brackets and wires. The result is precise, repeatable appliances and a clear treatment roadmap that cuts treatment time, reduces chair time and discomfort, and delivers faster, more predictable outcomes for both simple and complex cases.
