Oral Maxillofacial Surgeon Increases Accuracy, Reduces Operating Time Using VSP Orthognathics

3D Systems used its VSP® Orthognathics service to support Deepak Krishnan, DDS, at UC Health in planning a complex double‑jaw surgery for a patient with a unilateral cleft lip and palate who had maxillary hypoplasia, mandibular hyperplasia and facial asymmetry that impaired chewing and speech. The challenge was to accurately and efficiently pre-plan and execute the procedure to improve anatomical outcomes while reducing operating time.

Using VSP, the surgical team ran web-based planning sessions with interactive 3D models to test surgical options and prescribe precise osteotomies and movements; 3D Systems then SLA‑printed patient‑specific occlusal splints to transfer the virtual plan to the OR. The result was improved pre‑surgical visualization, a streamlined transfer of the digital plan into surgery, reduced operating time and intra‑operative adjustments, and better occlusion and overall surgical outcomes.
