A 3D Systems Case Study
3D Systems supported the SAM Department (Strömungsmechanik, Akustik und Strömungsmaschinen) at the Technical University of Kaiserslautern, which needed highly faithful models to link wind‑tunnel tests, flight data and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). The challenge was converting laser scans of physical aerospace models into defect‑free, watertight polygon models and ensuring any CFD-driven shape changes could be accurately reflected back into CAD for further design work.
Using Geomagic Design X, the team created optimal meshes with the Mesh Buildup Wizard, verified dimensional fidelity with the Accuracy Analyzer, and propagated changes back to CAD via CAD Correct or fully editable 3G parametric modeling for NX, Creo and SolidWorks. The CFD iterations using these models met or exceeded expectations, delivering high‑fidelity results and prompting the team to pursue additional projects with 3D Systems software.
