A 3D Systems Case Study
Fundidora Morelia (FM), a family-owned steel foundry, and its pattern shop PSSI teamed up to reproduce two iconic giant vases from Cochuco, Michoacán. Facing the challenge of producing very large, custom casting patterns without the long lead times and high costs of traditional pattern-making, the partners sought a faster, cost-competitive method that respected local craft heritage.
Using 3D scanning and CAD, PSSI printed full-size cope and drag patterns on Titan Robotics’ Atlas large-format pellet-extrusion 3D printer, then hand-finished the parts for casting. FM cast the vases in steel and stainless steel with blued and mirror-polished finishes. The addit ive workflow cut pattern production time roughly in half (1.5 days total with a 13-hour print), halved required labor, and delivered accurate, cost-effective reproductions.
