Metal Technology (MTI) forges new path with metal 3D printing and English Racing

Metal Technology (MTI), an Albany, Oregon specialist in advanced alloys and aerospace/defense components, was approached by English Racing to solve a chronic oil-pressure problem on high‑RPM Mitsubishi 4G63 race engines. English Racing had designed a larger‑diameter underdrive pulley to reduce oil pressure, but the original cast part required expensive tooling and long lead times, and efforts to produce a replacement had failed for over two years.

MTI used its new 3D Systems ProX DMP 300 metal printer to produce a working prototype in five hours and have the part installed and on track within three days. The printed pulley lowered oil pressure to safe levels, supported a production run of 35 parts, saved significant time and cost versus traditional methods, and helped English Racing set class speed records (184.9 mph at Pikes Peak and a later 196.6783 mph four‑door record).
