MEPhI harnesses 3D printing technology to quickly prototype much-needed engineering solutions

National Research Nuclear University MEPhI, a leading Russian engineering and research school, needed faster, more flexible prototyping to turn student ideas into marketable products. Relying on outside vendors caused long delays that hindered iterative design—especially for a priority project to develop a domestically produced, low-cost endoscopic capsule that would sharply reduce procedure costs for patients.

Installing a 3D Systems ProJet 460Plus full‑color printer gave MEPhI in‑house, high-detail prototyping within days. Engineers produced four rapid iterations of the capsule reader and stand, created plastic master models, and moved to production in about a month—cutting the development window by roughly tenfold. The printer continues to accelerate student projects and streamline the university’s innovation workflow.
