McLaren Flint Healthcare Uses the ARTHRO Mentor Simulator to Assess Residents’ Performance Prior to Performing Surgery

McLaren Flint Healthcare — a large community hospital affiliated with Michigan State University — found that new orthopedic residents, despite strong anatomical knowledge, lacked the hands-on skills and spatial orientation to perform arthroscopy safely in the operating room. The program needed a way to give residents realistic practice with arthroscopic instruments and objectively assess their readiness before allowing them to operate on patients.

The residency integrated 3D Systems’ ARTHRO Mentor simulator into the curriculum, requiring residents to complete module-based training with predefined proficiency benchmarks. The simulator’s realistic tactile hardware, high-fidelity anatomy, progressive educational content and detailed performance metrics let educators track skill acquisition; as a result, faculty can now assess competency outside the OR and feel more confident allowing residents to participate in real cases.
