A 3D Systems Case Study
Local Motors is a community-driven automaker reinventing vehicle design and production with mass customization and local manufacturing cells—their first model is the Rally Fighter. To realize rapid, custom designs they rely on 3D scanning of clay concept models and off-the-shelf components, but struggled to convert scan data into editable, parametric CAD models using their initial reverse‑engineering software, which produced unsatisfactory NURBS/surface data and forced time‑consuming back-and-forth workflows.
By combining a 3D Systems scanner with Geomagic Design X, Local Motors moved directly from scans to CAD, extracting prismatic features and freeform surfaces that integrate seamlessly with SOLIDWORKS. The new workflow reduced learning time, eliminated intermediate throwaway models, improved accuracy for fit checks (e.g., supercharger and engine‑bay components), and helped the company capture expected savings and accelerate time to market.
