LeaderTek and 3D Systems Bring 3D Scanning to Life of Pi with Geomagic

Taiwanese scan bureau LeaderTek partnered with 3D Systems’ Geomagic software to support visual effects studio Rhythm & Hues on Ang Lee’s Life of Pi. Rhythm & Hues needed accurate, stereo-ready assets for several hundred VFX shots—including a lifeboat and floating raft—and required a workflow that could capture and process very large point-cloud datasets for film-quality CG.

LeaderTek scanned the boat and raft with a FARO Focus3D laser scanner and used Geomagic Design X to merge, optimize and convert the massive scan data into a production .STL mesh for Rhythm & Hues. The result was a fast, efficient, high-quality deliverable that enabled the VFX team to realize the film’s complex CG elements for audiences worldwide.
