A 3D Systems Case Study
ABEN Machine Products, a 17-person job shop in Canoga Park, Calif., faced a critical production challenge when it won a contract to machine small aluminum and Inconel impellers for natural-gas turbine engines that its existing configuration couldn’t produce cost‑effectively. Their initial five‑axis software proved unintuitive and poorly supported, so the shop needed a practical, easy‑to‑learn CAM solution to take on the impellers and similar complex parts.
ABEN upgraded to GibbsCAM 5‑Axis with the MultiBlade option, received three partial days of training, and used the software’s automated feature recognition to drastically reduce programming steps and time (about a 70% programming-time reduction on a later sensor housing). The change enabled accurate five‑axis machining of tiny impellers and other complex parts in fewer setups, improved surface finish and rigidity with shorter tools, lowered costs, and opened the shop to new, higher‑value work.
