In-House 3D Printing Enables Innovation in Product Development

Crescent, Inc., a motion‑capture and image‑engineering company behind projects like Shin Godzilla, set out to develop a next‑generation VR head‑mounted display (HEWDD‑2). The firm faced weight and supply‑chain challenges—the original aluminum frame exceeded 1 kg—and needed a wireless, lighter design that maintained high resolution, wide viewing angle and precise fit of component parts.

Crescent adopted the 3D Systems ProJet MJP 2500 Plus for in‑house production of HMD casings, achieving true‑to‑CAD, high‑resolution parts with melt‑away wax supports to reduce post‑processing. The result: a wireless HEWDD‑2 that is 300–400 g lighter, preserves image quality and optics, includes precise features like threaded holes, speeds up production, and enables on‑demand customization (eye trackers, cameras) for varied users.
