Honda Performance Development Advances Engine Design with 3D Systems MultiJet Printing

Honda Performance Development (HPD), Honda’s North American racing arm, needed to turn a production V6 into the HR28TT race engine on an aggressive 11‑month schedule to meet racing design freeze rules. To accelerate development and avoid traditional manufacturing constraints, HPD added a ProJet CPX 3000 RealWax 3D printer to its workflow so teams could iterate designs quickly and deliver metal parts faster.

Using the ProJet CPX 3000, HPD printed wax patterns in two days and had investment‑cast metal parts back in 2–3 weeks for five critical components. The approach cut design time by up to two weeks and shortened the testing cycle from about eight weeks to four, enabling nearly twice as many design improvements; the HR28TT met reliability and performance targets, and HPD now uses the ProJet CPX 3000 for all new engine projects.
