GSL Smart Lab Uses the LAP Mentor for Superior Training

GSL SMART Lab, founded in 2012 as a joint training center of GSL College of Medicine and allied schools, set out to improve patient safety by closing the gap between classroom learning and operating-room skills. Director Dr. Sandeep Ganni sought a high-fidelity laparoscopic simulator that could teach both basic and advanced procedures, provide realistic haptic feedback, and objectively measure competency before trainees performed surgery on patients.

The lab implemented 3D Systems’ LAP Mentor and built a curriculum including a 6‑month LSS certification course and longer advanced-program tracks, using stepwise guided modules, free‑hand practice, benchmarks and debriefing. Results from internal evaluations show trainees who trained on the LAP Mentor were about 70% more proficient, had roughly 70% fewer complications and errors, and demonstrated greater confidence and independence in the OR — making the SMART Lab’s simulation-based laparoscopic training one of a kind in India.
