A 3D Systems Case Study
3D Systems’ Simbionix U/S Mentor played a central role when the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region around Dijon was overwhelmed by COVID-19 cases and physicians from many specialties had to perform lung ultrasound for triage and monitoring—often for the first time. The challenge was rapidly training large numbers of anesthesiologists, emergency doctors and general practitioners to recognize COVID-19 lung and cardiac findings and safely deploy point-of-care ultrasound in overwhelmed hospitals.
USEEM (Dijon University Hospital’s simulation center) implemented the new COVID-19 Ultrasound Module on the U/S Mentor and created France’s first mobile training unit, deploying compact, two-person transport to bring simulator-based, one-hour hands-on sessions to regional clinics. Dozens of clinicians were trained to perform rapid, bedside three-minute ultrasounds for patient categorization (rather than immediate CT), improving triage speed and safety; next steps include enabling GPs to capture and send images for remote analysis.
