A 3D Systems Case Study
Exeter University’s School of Engineering and School of Physics needed a faster, more affordable way to produce very fine, complex parts for both academic microwave-cloaking research and industry clients. Previously these one-off, metal‑plated samples had to be milled in the workshop—an expensive, time‑consuming process that limited experiments and commercial work while the university sought to attract more industry partners and research sponsors.
The school installed a ProJet HD 3000 high‑definition 3D printer (via reseller Thinglab), giving students and companies rapid access to high‑resolution, plateable parts. The printer cut lead times and costs, delivered superior detail at competitive investment levels, generated commercial interest through Exeter Advanced Technologies (X‑AT), and opened the door to advanced experiments (aiming for 100–150 µm features) and expanded industry-facing services.
